The Origin

The heart was part of his story before medicine was.

He was five years old when his father died of heart disease. He didn't grow up chasing an answer to that loss — he grew up curious about how things work: systems, circuits, the quiet logic underneath complicated machines. That curiosity became electrical engineering. Electrical engineering became medicine. Medicine became a specialty most people have never heard of: the electrical system of the human heart.

Only looking backward does the shape of it become clear.

Before the heart, there was the signal.

A way of seeing that never left. When he eventually found electrophysiology, it didn't feel like a career change so much as the place two interests had been heading all along.

Different Signal. Same Listening.

Medicine trained him to listen for signals — the ones that matter, buried among the ones that don't. Music asks for the same attention, aimed at something that isn't trying to be solved. He plays guitar. Not as a contrast to the work. As the same instinct, pointed somewhere quieter.

Also true, for what it's worth: he's been a Star Wars fan since childhood — another long-running interest in systems, discipline, and things that reward patience.

"Most of medicine is confident about what it knows and quiet about what it doesn't. That gap between the signal and the sensation is where I still have the most to learn."

A Life Principle

Scale the impact. Simplify the life.

Ambition and a full life aren't in competition here, though it can look that way from the outside. Building something that reaches people he'll never personally treat doesn't require a smaller life to make room for it — husband, father, books, nature, health, spirituality, time, curiosity. The goal has never been more. It's been enough, deliberately protected, alongside work that keeps growing.
